2019 annual conference of the Swiss association for art conservation and restoration SKR/SCR
Time and again, professional conservators and restorers are confronted with objects that have been restored in the past. The greater the public perception of a work, the greater the probability that it looks back a long and complex conservation history.
How do we approach the various steps taken, and modifications made, by our predecessors? Should we retain them at all costs? Or is it enough to document and then remove any changes in the interest of drawing nearer to a work’s original condition? What new problems or new damage may have been caused by earlier interventions? And what possibilities do we have to re-construct the conservation history of a work if no documentation exists?
SCR is dedicating its 2019 conference to this topic, with the aim of shedding light on the various issues from a wide range of standpoints. We are now seeking speakers* with experience in the complexities of this area to present examples at the event. The talks may be theoretical or practical in nature.
